Cruising Russia's Waterways - Group Participation - Sept. 2 - 12, 2010

"Up until Sept 3rd, my understanding of Russia was based entirely on books, TV and the internet. During the past 9 days I’ve become enlightened to the many facets of Russia & its people. This experience has convinced me that the education is to experience the country in person. During our river cruise I found our Russian Crew to be charming & hard working. As we sailed along the Svir River and Mother Volga I was surprised to see the similarity to Northern Ontario. Once can’t help be amazed at the extremes you see in Russia. From the most opulent palaces in the world to the modest riverside cabins that haven’t changed in a century. Now when I speak of Russia I’ll remember the smiling faces of Eugene & Ruslin & Rita. Bright, charming young people who are the faces of a new Russia.”

"Gliding along the waterway of the Tsars with the pastoral and forestry views was most peaceful and relaxing. Sights of St. Petersburg and their historical significance were awesome but at the same time troubling to see the affluence of the ruling class when so many were starving. Interesting to see Russia today and to hear the guides discuss their life. All and all a great trip as the travelling companions were great company and most enjoyable.”

"A unique country of very old buildings, customs and traditions carefully & sometimes humourously explained by our guides in very good English. The people are warm, helpful and diligent. Food is plentiful and well presented. All of their art, souvenirs and handwork are easily obtained but sales are never forced. More time for shopping would have been nice! This trip was truly a new and unique experience to be remembered with pleasure.”

"I love the people – they are quiet, shy at first, but are wonderful story tellers with a dry humour. St. Petersburg was beautiful with the colourful ornate buildings and canals. Lunch at the Podvorye restaurant was memorable with wonderful food, vodka, wine and music. The trip to Kizhi was made even more special by the three men singing in the church. It brought tears to my eyes.”

"I’d never thought a year ago today
I’d never thought I’d ever visit that large unfamiliar land of Russia (so grand)
I’d never thought I’d stand amongst the paintings by Rembrandt, Gaugin & Monet (so awesome)
I’d never thought that I’d stand waiting to see the grandeur of the Hermitage and sing Oh Canada (so unbelievable)
I’d never thought I’d ever see palaces as beautiful as those in St. Petersburg (so breathtaking)
I’d never thought I’d fall so in love with the Russian people, the music, the peaceful waterway of the rivers and lakes (so heartwarming)
I know now that there will be many more experience to come in Moscow (so exciting)
How wonderful to enjoy all of these things with the grand ladies of
